The Writing Journey

Traci is a seasoned writer and teacher who brings both warmth and rigor to her teaching. In her class I learned how to get inside my own work and understand it better. I had a dozen pieces of writing that defied my attempts to tame them, and Traci's class helped me figure them out.

Traci's classes and workshops have been incredibly useful for my own writing practice and projects. Her literary approach has helped me further understand the link between reading and writing. Studying writing with Traci has both improved my confidence in my own writing and given me the tools I needed to create better work.

THE NEXT STEP ON YOUR WRITING JOURNEY

In 1995, after my son was born, someone gave me Natalie Goldberg’s book, Writing Down the Bones and I committed to a writing practice. Back then, I had lots to process: new motherhood; a break up with my son’s father; echoes of my family’s disintegration; my deep love for my son; and on and on.

So I dove in. I filled dozens of notebooks. And I thought by filling notebooks stories and essays would simply emerge. Some did. After a decade, though, I became frustrated: Why did some stories work and others start strong and then drift off–or disintegrate?

That question took me years–one MFA and one short story collection later–of investigation.

I am passionate about what I discovered. And now I want to share my discoveries with you.

WRITE YOUR STORY

Narrative structures hold our stories together and allow our voices to carry and resonate. During this six-week course we investigate methods of using time and memory, structure and scaffolding, as well as narrator and voice, to allow us access to our true stories. The ones we think we want to tell, and the ones that want to be told.

For fiction and non-fiction writers, any level of experience.

DEEPEN YOUR WRITING

Every story has a pulse, and our job as writers is to find that pulse and infuse it into every word. This course will focus on integrating craft components–such as openings and closings, POV and pacing, dialogue and embodiment–so that the heart of your stories may be amplified and rendered into art.

For fiction and non-fiction writers, any level of experience.
